Revenue Appeals Tribunal holds inaugural CPD with Malawi Law Society

Inaugural CPD with Malawi Law Society

The Revenue Appeals Tribunal, in conjunction with the Malawi Law Society, held a day-long Continuing Professional Development workshop to discuss and appreciate the role of the Tribunal in tax administration and tax dispute resolution matters in Malawi.

Held in Lilongwe, the workshop aimed to expose participants to prevailing tax administration challenges and tax dispute resolution issues, and how the Tribunal's establishment helps create a conducive business environment for businesses and taxpayers alike.

The participants at the workshop included members of the Malawi Law Society, policymakers, tax specialists, accountants, development partners, tax administrators, and taxpayers.

The Registrar of the Revenue Appeals Tribunal, His Honour Timothy Chirwa, in his presentation highlighted the appeal processes and how parties to the tax dispute have to adhere to prescribed and strict statutory requirements like time frames, preparation of evidence, and representation to help the Tribunal resolve tax disputes fairly and with great speed.

In its Strategic Plan, the Tribunal has placed stakeholder engagement and public education intervention as one of its core objectives so that taxpayers and the general public understand the mandate of the Tribunal and how interested parties can effectively access their services.

While the Tribunal started its operations in April 2025, it was established by the Revenue Appeals Tribunal Act of 2021 to hear and determine appeals where a taxpayer is not satisfied with an objection decision made by the Commissioner General of the Malawi Revenue Authority.
